weeknotes #69
last updated 6 minutes ago
- nice! we made it! comedy number of weeknotes par excellence.
- it's so dark in the evenings, i don't like it. the clocks going back is always incredibly disorienting, today two became one and it was confusing as ever, and i'm still writing this late lol.
- read and enjoyed an article and self-belief, skateboarding and magic the gathering today, i may have mostly ignored the MTG bits but good to be reminded about audacity. been thinking a lot about being "delusional"/believing you can, despite evidence and circumstances being directly contrary to whatever it is you want often! i think a lot about it because of getting into the tech industry when i did was a stroke of good luck in a lot of ways, it was easier than a lot of other industries, various other circumstantial factors, BUT i was also not very mentally well and it was a leap of faith to trust that it would work out, at the same time. i will never be a mind over matter girly but mind and matter do have to align when it comes to taking your best shot i think.
- people sent me some forums to join after last week, thank you so much! very much enjoying exploring.
- also read less computer (read from the oldest post!) yesterday. had a good time even if i think more concrete examples would help, i don't fully agree with everything (though i do agree less enforced computer - and thus a lot less stressful, sad, coerced computer - would be great) and my beef with convenience being used as a proxy for the ills of the computer world pop up here too. i love a provocation!
Less computer is about less computer of all types. It is an intentional effort to reduce dependence on computational thinking and infrastructure. To be an informed participant in conversations about computers is to persistently challenge the use of any kind of computers, which leads to the best uses where they fit, and a reduction in all kinds of headaches and time commitments and power imbalances when they don't. - less computer, know the limits of technical fixes
- tried really hard to make myself cut out the pieces of fabric for a jumpsuit today and completely failed. i ironed the fabric?? i found the paper pieces and discovered i had misplaced the instructions, so bought the pdf pattern again. discovered it's a single lay ideally for cutting and then got tired mentally and procrastinated for hours, sad and resigned lol.
- i changed newsletter providers back to buttondown. deciding if i'm gonna try and stop browsing substack too, but i don't think so for now. just feel a lot of dissonance around posting on it, so trying to act in alignment with my values or whatever, even if that costs $9 a month lol. haven't sent one yet but this month's and onwards will be from there.
- still reading careless people, still spooked and appalled at every page turn lol.
- i'm spitballing some new blogs, and maybe ditching the slick video essay format of my dreams for something more like a recorded talk lol, so i actually make videos. some i noodled on this week: the four horsemen of the internet apocalypse (the line up changes a lot, obviously AI is included lol); something around commitment and the tech industry (i started working on this idea as a talk, "locking in: maintenance in the age of disposable technology" for EMF, a geek festival inc. camping and it was during the heatwaves so i couldn't manage it, gutted) and my white whale of somehow making a chat about internet connectivity interesting to more people than me and one other subsea cable freak lol.
- i think with videos my block is around how many stages there are to the final thing; i want subtitles, unobtrusive editing, maybe some jokes, for it to be long enough for it to be something i am proud of (twenty minutes plus maybe?) and to make a good and cogent point. i am just a beginner maybe i can step off my own neck and try some stuff before making a bunch of stipulations lol?? but much easier said than done, which is why it has been so long lol.
- i find myself more and less excited by technology every day. very strange times, i say, knowing everyone who has ever existed probably though their life was unendingly strange. "really makes you think!" 🤪
- this week i ate chicken, chickpea and sweet potato curry, much rice, rocky road, kale and mango swirl yoghurt.
- this week i drank more coffee, more water, and more vimto.
- i hope you've had a fantastic week and next week treats you so well. 💟
- see you next time?
