weeknotes #67
last updated 0 minutes ago
- hey hun, it's weeknotes number 67, the new funny number! the more funny number to the olds (myself included) is still to come, don't you fret.
- working on a few bits near enough simultaneously, and worrying a lot about actually finishing anything this side of the new year, but i'm unsure the worry helps anything. if you have trouble finshing what you start definitely get in contact.
- sorry to anyone who emailed me recently i was in a funk (derogatory) but now i have my funk (complimentary) back. i will reply i promise.
- one bit is to do with effective altruism, madness, taking your convictions seriously/to the end of their given road, and also why effective altruism, utilitarianism, and thus being as rich as (in)humanly possible, and giving away your money doesn't work for me, or possibly for anyone as a strategy. i'm still researching and thus reading a book i don't much like, moral ambition by rutger bregman. my takeaways so far, other than "don't get seduced by their arguments", are "quality of life and quantity of life are both important factors but not actually interchangeable ones" as well as "it's sad to think people's passions are hot swappable in such a sense it doesn't matter what they 'want', any want is as good as any other so long as it's focused on the greater good" and "he idolises a lot of shitty sounding people".
- second bit is deciding what to do with my research on fashion robots (tldr: they are still very early and the word of venture capitalists doesn't go very far with many people. "We have a crochet robot, give us your money and orders" sure!), it doesn't feel like a whole video/bit of writing but it still feels like it needs to go out into the world soon. i have lots of feelings and opinions around sweatshop labour in fashion and would love to read more about this but am surely searching on the wrong keywords as i can't find much of interest on solutions/ways to center workers AND completely overhaul their conditions, but will look into scholarly sources next.
- third bit is deciding what to do with a piece i was working on about oceans, space and the internet, and the abbreviated version of that goes "we focus a lot of money and energy on space flight and space innovation, why is that? why not explore the ocean?" it originally started as a piece around the time of earth day, and then it morphed to want to talk a bit about artemis ii, and now i want to talk about the thing with space x and subsea cables and internet access in this piece and it's getting a touch unwieldy.
- enjoying being in my notes and on my research is a leisure activity wavelength for so long.
- i struggle a lot with the difference between "this an interesting amount of a lot going on" vs "this lacks connective tissue. and bones actually. it's actually just an amorphous blob of ideas" vs "wow that was a short and concise and really interesting tidbit, thank you for being direct and to the point" but i definitely lean towards the middle clause in all my creations, which is why i haven't been posting much but weeknotes.
- approaching 170 days of journalling more or less daily! i have no insights into this "habit" at this point, other than doing it always at one time of day doesn't work for me!
- speaking of habits, i do almost nothing at the same time every day but waking up for work. accepting this about myself, and being the kind of person who likes to chase things as a habit (and it being separate from ambition, another thing i have been thinking about in relation to the effective altruism piece). this video/podcast from creative pep talk isn't world changing, but gave me some language and a more positive framing around it.
- i have been eating sticky tofu, much rice, chickpea and chorizo stew, the terrifyingly early first lebkuchen of the season and much tenderstem broccoli.
- i have been drinking water, london fog, chai lattes, and not enough coffee.
- i hope you've had a fantastic week and next week treats you so well. 💟
- see you next week?
